How Much Safer Is The World Thanks To Mobile Phones?

It doesn’t matter if you’re against them or have embraced them fully, mobile (cell) phones are now ingrained in our society. Their progression into staple tools of our lives has not always been a smooth one however. Some people believe that their radio waves have harmful effects on the body and others believe that they are making children illiterate. However, what people tend to agree on unanimously is that mobile phones have connected people all over the world and this has had the knock on effect of making people’s lives safer

There was a dilemma faced by parents up and down the country when mobile phones finally arrived on the mass markets. The clear benefits of being able to stay in touch children 24/7 and know their whereabouts added a huge amount to the appeal of mobile phones for adults. However, there were the inevitable concerns about how children would be using their phone and if they would be targeted by thieves given the expense of phones.  After a couple of years it became obvious that the benefits far outweighed the risks, and soon every child in the developed world had their own phone on their bedside tables.Further more, the risk of being a theft victim was dramatically reduced when service providers enabled people to block their phones if they had been stolen. Children could now report in with their parents, phone for help if it were needed, and even warn others of potentially harm almost instantly.

The improved overall safety is not just limited to children either. Millions of adults have also benefited from using their mobiles to get out of dangerous situations, from being able to call for help after an avalanche, to delivering a baby via guidance over the phone from a midwife. By allowing people to stay in contact with those close by or the other side of the world, many thousands of lives have been saved and much harm prevented. As they develop also, we will find new ways of using them to our advantage and their potential for good is almost limitless.
